ONE OF THE
LARGEST EXAMPLES KNOWN
- Description: Outstanding Example of a Massive
Lost Lake - This Lost Lake is one of the Largest Examples known.
It is not highly unusual to see examples of the Dovetail or Hardin
typologies exceed 7 inches, but for Lost Lakes, it is VERY rare to see
any exceed 5 1/2 inches or so. This Beast measures 6 7/8 inches.
It is VERY thin, with very little secondary flaking. I only know
of ONE that is a 3/16" larger and it is missing a whole ear. This
example MAY BE the largest intact example of the type that there is! The exact
recovery location, I have not been able to trace down, but I have been
able to backtrack it to Paducah, KY in the early 1960's. Sometime
between 1960 and 1962 Boyce Yates traded a coin and stamp collection for
a group of artifacts that were held by Hoskins Coin Shop in Paducah, KY.
He took them back to Mayfield, KY and framed them in Oval, Bubble Glass
frames no later than 1963. ( I confirmed this by the printing on
brown Paper bags for the Youngblood Bros. Stores placed in the back of
the frames for spacing with the Youngblood family of Mayfield. )
These framed artifacts hung in Mr. Yates home from then till March of
2017. From what I can find out, the group of artifacts were sold
or pawned to Hoskins Coin Shop prior to 1962 or so. I fell like
the Lost lake was recovered somewhere within a 50 or so radius of
Paducah, KY. Currently in our personal collection. (published in
the inside cover of Central States, Volume 66, Jan 2019, No. 1 and also
published Sec 6, pg. 367 in the Artifact Gallery of James R. Bennett's
"Avoiding Reproduction & Altered Ancient Indian Arrowheads")

- Description: Saint Louis Green Chert Frame #
1 - This 36 inch Frame is all one Lithic material, a nodular chert
found mostly in three KY counties but distributed widley. I have a
piece found by an Amish kid in Huron County, Ohio, a piece from the LBL
area of Western KY (thanks Pete Kurlas), a piece from Coffee County, TN.
About the only direction that it did not seem to travel far was East for
I have yet to see a piece from WV, VA, NC, or SC. It was used by
Prehistoric Peoples of ALL Archaeological periods! Because it is a
nodular chert, you will seldom see a piece anywhere close to six inches.

- Description: Adzes, Celts, and Dover Chisel -
The Dover Chisel is 6 1/4 inches with a 1/4 inch wide bit and the sides
of the chisel are highly ground. It was found by Rodney Tyree in
Lincoln County, KY. All of the Hardstone are from Central KY and
mostly from Madison County. The Hopewell Celt, center bottom, was
a personal find while surface hunting with my friend John Gibson.
The Adze, bottom Right was a personal find while hunting with John
Gibson in May 2003. The Adze just above it was found by Shane
Pendergrass on the same site about 30 feet from where I found mine when
I took him hunting there while he was visiting the next year.
Several years later I received a package in the mail from Shane.
Inside was the Adze and a note saying that they needed to be together!
The Adze above that was found by Jimmy Taylor in Madison County, Ky.
The totally polished Hematite Celt in the center is one of the finest I
have handled and was in the Roy Hathcock collection and pictured in
Who's Who #5 on Roy's Hematite Shelf, 2nd from right.

- Description: Some Local Celts - The two on
the left and the far right bottom are of Cotton Rock in a Celt form,
which is rare around here where 90% made of this material are Adzes.
The one at far right was found by Earl VanWinkle near Waco, KY.
The long Hardstone Hopewell Celt, 2nd from the left was found by Derrick
Hensley while hunting with his Grandfather, Steve Riley, in a field near
the Berea Water Plant in 1988 or 1989 and is 5 1/2 inches. The
Hopewell Celt, 2nd from the right was found by Jimmy Taylor in Madison
County, KY. The un-polished Breathitt Celt I purchased from the
finder locally in 2004. The Polished Breathitt Celt in the tip
right in 2017, I think. The spade or Celt, center right, was
supposed to be local, but is a material that I am not familiar with
unless it is a light green Breathitt. The cortex is right for
Breathitt. It is almost 7 inches long.

- Description: Madison County, KY Artifacts -
The three down the left side are personal finds, all Madison County, KY
as well as the two up from the bottom on the right. The Muldraugh
Spade in the center is 7 inches. The Breathitt Chert Paleo Uni-face
is 4 1/2 inches, thin and well worked. The abandoned Sandstone
pipe was found on the farm across the road from the Round Hill Mound,
and the tallied & scored Hematite piece a personal find from the old
Tojo Mason Site near Bybee, KY. The two at the bottom were found
in the same field together and look like they came off the some core
from the banding on the back side of them. One is a uni-face edge
knife, the other is also uni-face with three distinct spoke-shaves in it
of reducing sizes. Both have the same cortex remaining on one
edge.

Madison County, KY but three pieces. The canine Jaw bone has been
sawed in front and was found on a Fort Ancient site about a mile from my
home. The bottom right was found years ago along Barren River
Lake.

found this Boyle Chert Buck Creek while surface hunting in Madison
County, KY with Hayden Bybee, Shane Pendergrass, and Seth Pennington on
April 24th, 2004. It was found sitting straight up on it's edge
after a beat down rain as show in the in-situ. The other damaged
BC was found later by my buddy David in the same area of the field.

- Description: Glovers Cave Bottle - I acquired
this bottle at the 2016 Nashville Show and was told that it was supposed
to have been found by Col. Raymond Vietzen. Resorting to my
library, I found that this bottle was indeed recovered by Col.
Raymond C. Vietzen at Glover's Cave in Todd County, Kentucky and it is pictured
in "The Saga of Glover's Cave" (1956), page 116, figure 100.
You can match the fire marks right up with the pictured in the book! Condition

GAINED a Wife / Lost a Pot
- Description: Miniature Effigy Bowl - This fine
effigy pot was found in Poinsett County, Arkansas. It is an
effigy of a hooded or crested bird. Made of shell tempered pottery. These miniature effigy's are hard to come by.
I acquired this piece at the Fort Mitchell Show in 2003, I think.
When Jewdy got into collecting miniatures after we were married somehow
it became "her" pot! Still think I got the BEST deal! EX-
Monty Pennington, Jewdy Pennington Collection! :)

Seed Jar was found in Clark County, Arkansas on the Reynolds Site.
It is well proportioned with a very nice finish and great fire markings!
It was in Kevin Pipes personal collection. I had looked for a nice
seed jar for some time and when I finally got this one it was a "gift"

- Description: Great Banks Nodded Water Bottle -
This nice bottle was found by R.W.
"Dub" Lyerly at "Miller Mounds in Poinsett County, Arkansas. It is a shell tempered pieces of medium size with a slightly flaring neck, round base, and 4 round nodes. It is consistent with pieces from the middle Mississippian period from approx 750 to 500 years B.P.
I think a lot of Dub, and I am proud to own a piece from his personal
collection that he personally dug! Monty Pennington Collection

- Description: Clay Cooking Stones - I purchased
this neat Clay "Cooking Stone" from Rocky Hall many years ago. It
was found in shell heap near Clarksville. Clark County,
Indiana. An interesting note about many of these "cooking stones" from
the Poverty Point Site when discovered several years ago in that at least SOME of them have a
river pebble baked inside of them. To me this was an evolution of
technology in that the baked clay insulated the stone from the fire
while heating, then after placed in a pot with a porridge or stew, the
rock inside would keep dispersing heat for a longer period! This
example definitely has a stone inside!

- Description: Miniature Taylor engraved Caddo
Bottle - This Super Miniature is a Taylor engraved bottle circa
1200-1400 AD. It was found in Morris County, Texas by Ralph
Nichols from Dangerfield, Texas. Sam Johnson purchased from the
finder then sold to Dale Roberts of Iowa over a 6 year period over 40
years ago in whose collection they remained until Sam Johnson and Rick
Steed re-acquired them in Feb. 2018 and sold to Tom and Ruth Ann Davis.
Now retired to Jewdy Pennington's collection.

- Description: Mississippian Pie Crust Bowl - I
purchased this very nice gray Mississippian "Pie Crust" bowl
at the 1st AACA Expo in Fort Mitchell, KY. It was found in Craighead County, Arkansas that will date to about 1000 B.C. It has a label with the following info "IND-1266A Mound Builders cat# 0054". This nice gray is solid except for the two pieces near the rim. I cannot find any glue showing, so I am not sure whether these have been glued back in or are just stress cracked. A nice bowl with nice form and a pie crust rim.

purchased this nice Bottle years ago from R.W.
"Dub" Lyerly. It was found in Mississippi County, Arkansas by Jeff Baker
while digging with "Dub". Made of shell tempered pottery, it is a medium sized water bottle with a slightly flaring neck and a flat base. Recovered from the "Wildy" site. It is consistent with middle to late Mississippian period pieces dating from around 700 to 400 years B.P.
